Raving Mother article....

THIS lady is on to it......check this out and tell me if this doesnt just hit the nail right on the head......sigh.....

No Child Left Behind (AKA: Test them until they implode!)

It's not breaking news by any means. GWB signed that optimistic legislation in 2001 - a piece of legislation that sounded so absolutely wonderful, who could not buy into it? Finally, ALL children would receive a quality education.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.....................

For those unfamiliar with what NCLB actually looks like in practice, here's a tidbit.
(A) use the State academic assessments and other indicators described in the State plan to review annually the progress of each school served under this part to determine whether the school is making adequate yearly progress as defined in section 1111(b)(2);
Key words above are "State academic assessments".

If you haven't had a child or grandchild who has been subjected to the assessments yet, think back to the good old SATs you took in high school.

For many of us, the SATs were complete stressors. For those, like myself, test scores were rarely indicative of actual abilities (I had severe test anxiety and undiagnosed, ADHD). But, thank goodness we only had to take them once or twice.

Today's children, as young as 8 years old are taking State academic assessments on an ongoing basis, regardless of the anxiety such tests invoke.

What does this mean for our schools? It means that Mrs. Jones who used to be a creative teacher must put away her proven methods. She must stop making learning fun. She must now "teach the test". Failure of her students to achieve adequate scores on State academic assessments indicates that she is not an effective teacher. It also means her school could lose Federal funds.

Now lets take into account the fact that some kids do test well. That's just great. But they too, must continue to "learn the test" despite being excellent testers- add boredom and general disdain for school here.

But what about the child who is exceptional? How are those with learning and other disabilities affected by these tests? Some of that is determined by individual State regulations. However, NCLB requires that all children take these assessments regardless.

In Pennsylvania, there are some pretty rigid guidelines about accommodating children with exceptionalities. The code is non specific:
(j) Children with disabilities and children with limited English proficiency shall be included in the State assessment system as required by Federal law, with appropriate accommodations, when necessary. As appropriate, the Commonwealth will develop guidelines for the participation of children with disabilities in alternate assessments for those children who cannot participate in the State assessment as determined by each child’s Individualized Education Program team under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and this part.
Appropriate accommodations is the key phrase. What is appropriate? Let's dig further.Below are some of the allowable accommodations.
  • Braille
  • Large Print
  • Magnification Devices
  • Screen Magnification Software
  • Sign Language
  • Human Reader (Mathematics and science PSSA tests only)
Billy has Dyslexia. He is in 3rd grade Math, Science, etc. However, for reading, he is in a special remedial reading program. PA schools are not required to acknowledge a reading disorder in students until they reach age 7 and often put that off longer. Billy is now 8 and has started this program. He is only reading now at a pre-kindergarten level.

Billy will test at 3rd grade level for both Math and Reading despite his disability. He may have someone read his Math questions to him. However, for the Reading Comprehension tests, Billy is on his own. Billy fails the reading portion, miserably because he cannot read at this level yet. His comprehension is 0%.

Mary has an Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD. She is a "math wiz" when presented with numbers and patterns. However, due to her disabilities, she has poor executive function skills which interfere greatly with her ability to sequence steps for problem solving. In school, Mary uses preprinted graphic organizers to help her break down the steps necessary to solve word problems. These organizers are papers with prompts in steps such as:
  1. What do we already know?
  2. What do we want to know?
  3. Draw the problem in pictures.
  4. What type of problem is this?
  5. Show your work.
  6. Check your work.
These organizers remind Mary to break down the problem in sequential steps so that she can accurately process the information and solve the problem. However, during the State assessment, Mary is not allowed to have these organizers. She is on her own. Ironically, she is allowed to have a blank sheet of paper which she can then create her own organizer, were it she could remember the steps. Mary fails to score well on the math portion of the test due to the multitude of word problems.

So this brings to mind a very huge question. Why aren't these children tested at their own level? Why aren't they allowed tools to help them with a manifestation of their disability?

We all want our children to succeed in school. Yesterday's special education was merely "life skills" for those with cognitive disabilities. Today's expectations are much higher and rightly so. But, we have to acknowledge the efforts our schools ARE making to help these children learn. And we have to acknowledge that you cannot "teach the test" to these children.

State academic assessments are subjective, discriminatory and poor indicators of a school's performance or a child's abilities. And in this Mom's opinion...they are unnecessary stressors for our already stressed out kids.

Now I have seen this first hand with Stinger when he was signed up with K12-those tests were just rediculous of showing ANYONE what his true abilities were-"so what if he cant even read the questions-he has to be tested at that level anyway"-what a bunch of phoeey......and you know what-despite all the comfy goodness feelings K12 falsely gave us-that testing they required I am glad to say is history now that we are on our own. I am glad to say its all in the past and WILL stay there......

Happy New Year :)

Well Its been awhile hasnt it......
Things have just been busy and well....Ive been lazy.....LOLOLOLOL
Did everyone have a wonderful Christmas??????
We sure did here. The kids woke up abt 8:30 and it was all crazy after that-LOLOL Crazy, loud and FUN! WHOOT!!! Christmas is STILL my favorite time of the year-just too wait until Christmas morning to the kids faces is enough to keep me up all night like I used to when I was a kid-LOLOLOL
Our new Wii system is getting VERY good use by all ;) That was teh big gift this year. Dh surprized me and got me Wii Fit. Can I just say that I am still sore as we speak my calves are KILLin' me!!!! So yeah-its kicking my butt-which is a good thing. It tracks every day and new activities are opened up depending on how much you are on it. I like the running, and Yoga the best and sheesh-that Yoga is DANG hard!
And guess what-wonder of wonders Ive gained all my weight back since the holidays :( BOO-HOO! But enough abt me and my sad shape-LOLOL But Ill get back into my groove now that there isnt alot of baking and sweets ard. hmmmmm? LOLOLOL
The kids love the sports program that came with the system. There is boxing, baseball, tennis, baseball and they can actually play against each other. Its a real good sytem. They have to get up off their butt and actually swing, batt, box etc-its quiet a workout :) Which is good for everyone-kwim?
So after all the gifts were unwrapped, cinnamon rolls and sausage eaten, we headed off to Granmaws where Papa and Nana were. We were not going to go as the weather wasnt looking so good. Out on the road the weather was rainy but we didnt think it was THAT bad. So we decided to go and we'd turn back if it was worse than we had thought. It was great to see Papa and Nana and all our cousins and everyone. Such good loves and hugs and smiles and kisses- We LOVED it!!!! Thank you Papa and Nana for the sweet gifts. Dh and I are sooooo cozy in our nice new flannel sheets-AHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh :) :) PS Dh loved his weights for his B-day-he said to tell you Thanks :)
So we go home and sheesh-we must have gotten caught in a blizzard as it was AWEFULL!!!! I have never been so scared in all my life. Ive driven in bad weather and ist not nearly as scary when you dont have precious cargo with you though-kwim? I was saying prayers all the way home. Flamingo said she was too. So the Lord must have been hearing our pleas beacuse we made it home all right. Luckily I had a chance to call Papa and Nana and tell them to stay put as they had planned on going home that night. So I thank the Lord for that close call as well. I am sure blessed to have a Father in Heaven who listens and hears me when I cry up to him.
But all in all it was a WONDERFUL Christmas and I am sooo blessed to have such a wonderful family and such a safe driving Dh who got us home okay.

And now its New Years.......no big plans. I put a pork loin in my new cooker(its alot like Nana's;)) for B-Q sandwiches tonight and Ive got to make a cheese dip deal for our crackers, veggies, bread etc. Ive got a samll package of small sausages too that I will heat up and people can just snack on that tonight as we watch the ball drop. Though It will proabably be just dh and I-I imagine the kiddoes will conk out way ahead of time-LOLOLOL

Flamingo has her EEG appointment and neurological consult at Primary's on the 5th to see what is up with her blackout/petite-mal seizure deals. And guess what time we have to be there-7:45!!!!!EEEEIKKKK! Fun. Im supposed to put her to bed the night before at 10 and get her up at 4 AM and have her stay awake until we get to the hospital-now HOW the heck can i do that????When Primary's is 2 hrs away??????So Stinger might be coming with us to poke her and not let her fall asleep. No caffeine or sugar and wash her hair-no cond or styling products the night before also. So wish us luck and please keep her in your prayers that all goes well. :)

Autism Night Before Christmas

loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove it!!!!!!! Enjoy and Merry Christmas!!!!

Autism Night Before Christmas
by Cindy Waeltermann AutismLink

Twas the Night Before Christmas
And all through the house
The creatures were stirring
Yes, even the mouse

We tried melatonin
And gave a hot bath
But the holiday jitters
They always distract

The children were finally
All nestled in bed
When nightmares of terror
Ran through my OWN head

Did I get the right gift
The right color
And style
Would there be a tantrum
Or even, maybe, a smile?

Our relatives come
But they don't understand
The pleasure he gets
Just from flapping his hands.

"He needs discipline," they say
"Just a well-needed smack,
You must learn to parent..."
And on goes the attack

We smile and nod
Because we know deep inside
The argument is moot
Let them all take a side

We know what it's like
To live with the spectrum
The struggles and triumphs
Achievements, regressions...

But what they don't know
And what they don't see
Is the joy that we feel
Over simplicity

He said "hello"
He ate something green!
He told his first lie!
He did not cause a scene!

He peed on the potty
Who cares if he's ten,
He stopped saying the same thing
Again and again!

Others don't realize
Just how we can cope
How we bravely hang on
At the end of our rope

But what they don't see
Is the joy we can't hide
When our children with autism
Make the tiniest stride

We may look at others
Without the problems we face
With jealousy, hatred
Or even distaste,

But what they don't know
Nor sometimes do we
Is that children with autism
Bring simplicity.

We don't get excited
Over expensive things
We jump for joy
With the progress work brings

Children with autism
Try hard every day
That they make us proud
More than words can say.

They work even harder
Than you or I
To achieve something small
To reach a star in the sky

So to those who don't get it
Or can't get a clue
Take a walk in my shoes
And I'll assure you

That even 10 minutes
Into the walk
You'll look at me
With respect, even shock.

You will realize
What it is I go through
And the next time you judge
I can assure you

That you won't say a thing
You'll be quiet and learn,
Like the years that I did
When the tables were turned.......

8 Days and Counting.....

YIKES!!!!!!
Has Christmas come way too fast this year for anyone else? I love it....but its comin' too fast. We've got all of teh shopping done now which is alwasy nice-I hate putting things off wondering and hoping I can still get to the stores for fear of it snowing too hard. I HATE driving and going out in the snow-driving in town etc.
Each and every year Im reminded of way back when I had a telemarketing job here in Utah and had to get to work and I was slipping all over the place in my pink car-LOLOLOLOL Id slowly get closer and closer to the curb just slidding......ugh.....I dont even like thinking abt it-and thats what pops into my head each and every time its snowing and Im driving.......no wonder I dislike driving in snow so much-Ive just got oodles of great memeories of my driving abilities in it!LOLOLOLOL
We had our first real snow storm on Monday and its still on the ground. So Im just waiting for another go-round. But I actually like shoveling. Something abt that cool crisp air and everything being so dead quite out -breathing in the fireplace smell of neighbors wood stoves. Its great-weird I know-but I like it.
This month in school we have been really studying the reason fro teh season and traditions of other countries. Stinger has really been enjoying it and Ive even gotten some Christmas books from the book mobile that he WANTS to read! WHOOT!!!!! Today was another very sucessful social group! WHOOT!!!! He actually played go fish with someone and made 2 decorations for the Christmas tree. And guess what came out of his mouth when we were driving home. "Mom I had fun today." !!!!!!!!!!WHAT???!!!!!!! WHOOT!!!!!!!! NEVER did I think Id ever hear those words coming from social group!!!So things are going really well with Stinger :)
Flamingo is just thoroughly enjoying the season! LOLOLOL Shes all smiles and giggles. I havent been noticing her zoning out too much. So Ive still got my eyes on her all the time. Guess we will know more when we go to Children's. She made a flannel hat today in school and decorated it all with buttons. She is so proud of it and shes even wearing it to bed tonight! LOLOLOLOL She's such a silly goose!
Monkey Boy is bouncing ard more than usual-must be the gifts under the tree! I catch him peeking every hour it seams-LOLOLOLOL. We made some cinnamon ornaments today. He had a really good time trying to eat them-but quickly found out they didnt taste as good as the smelled. He's really after the goodies this year-I catch him sneeking chocolates quiet frequently from the cookie jar. Seams hes always got some kind of goodie or another in his mouth lately. When teh neighbors bring ove rgoodies hes alwasy standing right there to see what they have brought. Stinger wont touch anything that comes from anyone elses house. He seams to think he will get germs and its not safe......speaking of...
Stinger and I have been watching Monk in the mornings when Im excercising. He LOVES it and thinks its sooo funny and sooo true! LOLOLOLOL. Monk is a detective who has OCD issues very similar to Stinger and Stinger I think really relates to him. He really gets a kick out of watching Monk in situations that he is not comforteable with and laughs and laughs......LOLOLOLOL Its quiet funny. But thats what we do in the mornings while Im on the bike.
My diet-well its going okay. I HATE making goodies and trying not to eat them! LOLOLOL But Im doing really well. Tomorrow Im making Nanas Pecan puffs-so we shall see how good I still can be! LOLOLOL(those are my Christmas favorites!!!!)
My diet consists of cereal or eggs/toast for Breakfast, sandwich for Lunch, and small helping of whatever Im cooking for dinner. I can snack on cottage cheese, fruits and veggies inbetween these meals. Good thing Im a lover of cottage cheese! Thats all Im going to say......LOLOLOL ;) Im trying to follow a book call YOU on a Diet. Ive weighed myself for three weeks now and it looks like Im loosing abt 3-4 pds a week-which is AWESOME!!!!!!Dh is being very supportive and saying good jobs all the time-which is VERY nice and is helping me alot. I can kinda see my cheek bones better-which is nice. I guess your face is the first thing noticeable so dh says. We want to get Wii fit sooooooooooooooooo bad-but ist not going to happen before Christmas it looks like. I guess Dh's buddy at work says he knows someoen who works at Walmart and that they are just getting in 1-2 a week and they are gone even off the palet when they get to the store. So we shall see abt getting that later maybee. You can still find them out there but they are double what you can get at Walmart. A Wii system is the kids big Christmas this year along with some other small stuff.
Only 8 days...sheesh I still cant believe a week from today and its here! WHOOT!!!!

A Parents Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house
I searched for the tools to hand to my spouse.
Instructions were studied and we were inspired,
In hopes we could manage "Some Assembly Required."

The children were quiet (not asleep) in their beds,
While Dad and I faced the evening with dread:
A kitchen, two bikes, Barbie's town house to boot!
And, thanks to Grandpa, a train with a toot!

We opened the boxes, my heart skipped a beat....
Let no parts be missing or parts incomplete!
Too late for last-minute returns or replacement;
If we can't get it right, it goes in the basement!

When what to my worrying eyes should appear,
But 50 sheets of directions, concise, but not clear,
With each part numbered and every slot named,
So if we failed, only we could be blamed.

More rapid than eagles the parts then fell out,
All over the carpet they were scattered about.
"Now bolt it! Now twist it! Attach it right there!
Slide on the seats, and staple the stair!
Hammer the shelves, and nail to the stand."
"Honey," said hubby, "you just glued my hand."

And then in a twinkling, I knew for a fact
That all the toy dealers had indeed made a pact
To keep parents busy all Christmas Eve night
With "assembly required" till morning's first light.

We spoke not a word, but kept bent at our work,
Till our eyes, they went bleary; our fingers all hurt.
The coffee went cold and the night, it wore thin
Before we attached the last rod and last pin.

Then laying the tools away in the chest,
We fell into bed for a well-deserved rest.
But I said to my husband just before I passed out,
"This will be the best Christmas, without any doubt.

Tomorrow we'll cheer, let the holiday ring,
And not have to run to the store for a thing!
We did it! We did it! The toys are all set
For the perfect, most perfect, Christmas, I bet!"

Then off to dreamland and sweet repose I gratefully went,
Though I suppose there's something to say for those self-deluded...
I'd forgotten that BATTERIES are never included!

This was ohhhhhhh sooo funny- how I can remember these wonderful nights! LOLOLOLOL
