Some autism parents take on the entire therapeutic program. They build their own occupational therapy rooms, hire consultant/teachers to bring them up to speed, and spend hours a day actually providing their child's therapy.
When their kids are ready for school, these same parents spend unending hours researching special education law. They hire advocates and learn from them. They come to school IEP meetings armed with reams of paperwork. They may even take on the job of training 1:1 aides, teachers or therapists in techniques they believe are best for their kids.
When things start to go wrong in school, autism parents don't shrink from the tough battles.
Yet so very often, when someone asks "would you consider homeschooling your child?," autism parents shake their heads. "No way," they say. "I could never handle that!"
From the trenches, having gone both routes, I have a message to autism parents for whom the school battles are becoming a little too much. The truth is - after all you've done, learned, and managed - homeschooling is a walk in the park! The work you've done in learning about your child, his needs, his learning style and his rights is already complete. Now comes the fun part: exploring the world together!
